Entrepreneur Nails New Venture With Northlake Mall Salon

LaToya Evans, owner of LEPR Agency in Charlotte, expanded her holdings with Charlotte’s Nails in Northlake Mall.

LaToya Evans, owner of Charlotte’s Nails, is not a licensed nail technician, but she’s always dreamed of opening her own salon.

Evans found the perfect location in Northlake Mall in May and the shop opens this month just in time for the holidays. She has been exploring opportunities to franchise or partner with nail brands and salons.

“What I know is business,” Evans said. “I know what makes sense and what doesn’t, and I know what people like. I know how people like to feel and so in the beginning of any business you have to kind of collaborate, not just profit margins, but also operations.”

The Northlake location was suggested to Evans by City Council member James Mitchell. The space had been vacant for three years after the previous owners left during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Northlake Mall continues to be a tremendous opportunity for both local and national businesses,” Mitchell said in a statement. “I’m excited to see the mall continue to attract new businesses, especially those created by local owners.”

Evans, who has lived in Charlotte for 10 years, loves to indulge in luxury experiences and feels every woman deserves to do so as well. Some of her favorite childhood memories include times she spent with her mom at a Black woman-owned salon up the street from her home in Fayetteville.

“Grooming was an important part of my childhood, and my mother instilled those routines for hair and nails in me very early,” Evans said. “For years, we went to a Black- and woman-owned nail salon in our neighborhood which was just one of many minority-owned establishments nearby. As someone who has always wanted to own a nail salon, I look back on that Black-owned ecosystem, and I see an opportunity in Northlake Mall.”

The salon’s name is in honor of the stillborn daughter she delivered in October 2022. “I chose to name my daughter Charlotte because I’ve used Charlotte as the city that saved my life in so many ways,” she said.

Beauty and self-care practices are important to Evans, founder of LEPR Agency, a public relations firm, as she adapts to a more rigorous schedule with the new business. Although it can be difficult to carve out time to relax, she understands the need to take time for self.

“My goal is to make it feel like you’re not in a mall to take you out of the hustle and bustle of the external space but bring you into a space where you can relax,” Evans said. “You can focus on getting our service done. You can read your books; you can watch whatever we’re playing on the television, and you can really enjoy your me time, your self-care.”
