In a significant move towards fostering inclusivity, Neema Pickett has been appointed as the new Black Community Engagement liaison for the City of Albuquerque. This appointment comes after Nichole Rogers, the previous liaison, stepped into her new role as a city councilor in District 6.
A Beacon of Hope: Neema Pickett’s Mission to Unify
With a mandate to cultivate a more inclusive environment for Albuquerque’s Black community, Pickett’s responsibilities are multifaceted and crucial. She is actively involved in initiating Black student unions in high schools, a step towards nurturing a sense of belonging and solidarity among young African Americans.
One of her most prominent tasks is overseeing the city’s Racial Equity training, currently underway at Balloon Fiesta Park. This program is a testament to Albuquerque’s commitment to addressing systemic racism and promoting equality.
Harnessing Experience for Change
Bringing 25 years of business ownership experience to the table, Pickett is well-equipped to tackle the challenges that lie ahead. She is keen on leveraging this expertise to address the needs of the local business community, particularly those owned by African Americans.
“My experience in business ownership has given me a unique perspective on the struggles and triumphs of Black entrepreneurs,” says Pickett. “I am committed to using this knowledge to create an environment where every business can thrive.”
Amplifying Voices: Awareness and Support
Pickett’s agenda goes beyond addressing immediate concerns. She aims to increase awareness and support for the Black community among other New Mexicans. To achieve this, various events and programs are being planned across the city in recognition of Black History Month.
“It’s essential to educate our fellow New Mexicans about the rich history and culture of the Black community,” explains Pickett. “By raising awareness, we can foster understanding, empathy, and ultimately, unity.”
As Albuquerque embraces this new chapter, the city looks forward to the positive changes that Neema Pickett’s leadership will bring. Her dedication to fostering inclusivity, combined with her extensive business background, makes her an invaluable asset in the fight against anti-blackness and racism.
Under Pickett’s guidance, the City of Albuquerque is not just working towards equality but also striving to create a space where every voice is heard, every story is told, and every individual feels they truly belong.
