Women & Minority-Owned Businesses Shut Out Of Most State Contracts In N.J.

Whether it is construction work, engineering services or supplying computer equipment, the vast majority of companies that do business with New Jersey are run by white men, according to an analysis of the $18.6 billion state contracts awarded over five years.

The research, overseen by the state Department of Treasury’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion, will enable the state to better focus on expanding opportunities for businesses owned by women, minorities and disabled veterans, Gov. Phil Murphy and state Treasurer Elizabeth Maher Muoio said in announcing the study.

“I look forward to the work ahead as we identify responsive state action while launching initiatives to promote equitable contracting practices with the support of our lawmakers and the business community,” Murphy said.
